Frequently asked questions in Kumaon, Uttarakhand
Planning this journey?Share pickup, destination and date. We’ll reply with a clear trip quote.

Questions we are actually asked, grouped by topic. Route-specific questions are answered on each route page, and Adi Kailash has its own detailed sections.

Booking and fares

The short version on fares: we quote per journey rather than publishing a rate card, because a one-way drop, a round trip, a peak-season Saturday and a quiet Tuesday in September are genuinely different costs and a single published number would mislead you. Send the route, date and passenger count and you get a firm figure with the inclusions listed.

Frequently asked questions – mountain road and travel scenery in Uttarakhand
Mountain travel in Kumaon is shaped by road, weather, distance and the vehicle you choose.

Common questions

How do I book a taxi from Kathgodam?

WhatsApp or call +91 77038 80430, or use the booking form. Send pickup point, destination, date, passenger count and luggage. We reply with a fare and what it includes.

Why do you not publish a fixed fare list?

Because it would mislead you. The same route costs differently one way versus return, by vehicle class, in peak season versus off season, and with waiting time versus a straight drop. Published quotes online for Kathgodam to Nainital range from about seven hundred rupees to over two thousand, and both ends of that range are real for different arrangements. We would rather quote your actual journey.

What is included in the fare?

We tell you at the quote stage. Typically fuel, driver and the journey itself; tolls, parking, state taxes, waiting beyond an agreed period, added stops and night charges may be separate depending on the booking. You will know before you commit, not afterwards.

Why is a one-way drop not half the price of a round trip?

Because the driver usually returns empty. You are paying for a vehicle and a driver's day rather than only for the kilometres you occupy. Most quoting systems hide this; we would rather explain it.

Can I get a taxi at Kathgodam station without booking?

Usually yes — there is a stand outside the exit and drivers approach arriving passengers. For a short daytime run it is often fine. Pre-book for pre-dawn arrivals, long routes, families with luggage, or a fixed onward schedule. Full detail on the station page.

What happens if my train is delayed?

Give us the train number rather than a time and we track it. A delayed train does not cost you extra on a booking we already hold.

Which vehicle should I book?

Decided by passengers, luggage and route. Hatchback or sedan for short hill runs; SUV for families, long climbs or anyone prone to motion sickness; 4x4 beyond Dharchula; Tempo Traveller for nine or more on main roads. The fleet page has the detail, including what not to book.

Will my luggage fit?

Tell us the number and size of bags when you book. A sedan seats four adults and will not take four large suitcases — that mismatch is the single most common problem we see at pickup.

Is it safe to travel in the monsoon?

Between late June and September, landslides on these roads are routine rather than rare. Journey times become unpredictable and some routes close. We will tell you if we think a journey should be moved. See our monsoon travel guide.

Do you drive at night?

We do pre-dawn station pickups routinely. We are more cautious about long night drives on the rougher high routes — the road past Thal toward Munsiyari, or anything beyond Tawaghat — and we would rather propose a daylight start than accept a booking we think is a bad idea.

Do you provide child seats?

Ask when booking and we will tell you honestly what we can arrange rather than promising something we cannot supply.

Can I book a taxi for Adi Kailash?

Yes, but it is not an ordinary booking. It requires an Inner Line Permit issued at Dharchula, an appropriate vehicle, and a route that is subject to closure. Check the current status before you plan anything, and read the Adi Kailash section.

Do you offer self-drive car rental?

No. All our vehicles come with an experienced local driver.

Do you serve destinations outside Kumaon?

We run long outstation journeys, but our expertise is Kumaon and we say so rather than claiming national coverage we do not have.
