Quick answer
A realistic day of driving in Kumaon is 150 to 250 km, not the 300-plus a flat-road calculator gives you. The constraint is gradient, bends and road surface, not distance: Kathgodam to Munsiyari is about 280 km and takes ten to twelve hours. Plan around driving hours and the circuits below work. Four days covers the lakes. Five adds Almora and Ranikhet. Six reaches the Bageshwar and Chaukori side. Seven is the minimum for Munsiyari, and even then Munsiyari is realistically a two-day drive each way — so a seven-day Munsiyari trip is mostly driving, and we would rather you knew that now.
Why we plan in hours, not kilometres
Look at the published figures for the routes we run and do the arithmetic. Nainital is 34 to 35 km and takes one to one and a half hours — because the road climbs roughly 1,500 metres in thirty kilometres. Munsiyari is 275 to 285 km in ten to twelve hours, an average in the twenties of kilometres per hour, door to door, including stops. Pithoragarh is 180 to 215 km in six to eight.
None of that indicates a bad road. It is simply what continuously winding single and one-and-a-half lane mountain highways do to average speed. Three things make it worse than the map suggests:
- Altitude gain counts more than distance. A thirty-kilometre climb takes as long as sixty kilometres on the flat and tires passengers far more.
- Town congestion is not in the estimate. Nainital entry queues in season, and parking pressure at Kainchi Dham, can add an hour to a ninety-minute drive.
- Diversions are structural, not exceptional. The Kwarab stretch below Almora has been closed repeatedly since 2024. A Ranikhet diversion is not a rounding error.
The planning rule we use for every circuit on this page. Six hours of driving is a full day and you will not want to do much else with it. Four hours is a comfortable day with a real afternoon at the other end. Two hours is a transfer and half a day free. Build the trip out of those three units and you will not be disappointed by it.
About the distances in these tables. Every figure that appears as a range is drawn from published sources — district administration figures, highway records and our own driving. Where we could not verify a distance for an inner-Kumaon leg, the table says not verified rather than carrying a number we made up. Two figures are marked derived: they are subtractions from published totals, and we show the working so you can judge them yourself. This is a genuine limitation of the guide and we would rather flag it than paper over it.
Four days: the lakes circuit
The best short trip in Kumaon, and the one we would recommend to most first-time visitors. It stays below 2,100 metres, never asks more than about two hours of driving in a day, and works straight off an overnight train. Base yourself once, at Bhimtal or Nainital, and work outwards.

Optional swap. If you want a viewpoint day and are prepared to spend two to three hours in the car, the Mukteshwar area is reached from the Bhimtal–Dhanachuli road that also forms the shortcut route to Pithoragarh. We have not been able to verify a published distance for the Bhimtal to Mukteshwar leg and so we are not going to print one. Plan it as a half day, ask the driver on the morning, and treat it as a substitute for the Nainital day rather than an addition to it.
Five days: lakes plus Almora and Ranikhet
The first circuit that actually moves. You change hotel once, cross the Khairna fork, and see the two hill towns that predate the tourist trade — Almora, the cultural capital of Kumaon, developed by the Chand kings; and Ranikhet, a cantonment and the headquarters of the Kumaon and Naga Regiments.

The Kwarab stretch, and what to do about it. Kwarab sits on NH-109 between Khairna and Almora, in the Kosi valley. A landslide dating from 2024 has produced an on-and-off closure ever since. By September 2025 there were reported cracks in the new bridge, splitting retaining walls and a sunk carriageway; heavy vehicles were banned for a spell of more than twenty days and traffic was diverted through Ranikhet; NHAI approved a slope-treatment scheme reported at around ₹40 crore. The stretch was closed again from 29 May 2026 until further orders, with official diversions sending light vehicles and buses over the Kwarab bypass and heavy vehicles round by Almora–Vishwanath–Shahrafatak or Khairna–Ranikhet.
We will not tell you whether it is open today, because we cannot verify that from a web page. What we can tell you is what it means for an itinerary. Any day that reaches Almora, or passes through Almora on the way to Bageshwar, Chaukori or Munsiyari, should carry an extra one to two hours of slack, because the Ranikhet diversion is a real detour and the corridor gets busier whenever Kwarab is shut. If your circuit has a tight connection on that day, move it. And note that the Bhimtal–Dhanachuli route to Pithoragarh avoids the zone entirely, which is why it appears in the seven-day plan below.
Six days: reaching the Bageshwar and Chaukori side
This is where a Kumaon trip stops being a hill-station holiday and starts being a journey into inner Kumaon. Beyond Almora the road becomes NH-309A — the Rameshwar, Gangolihat, Berinag, Bageshwar, Takula and Almora alignment, 126 km end to end — and it is described as very good but single-lane with many curves. Kausani and Chaukori are the two places travellers most often ask to add on this side.
An honest limitation. We have not been able to verify published point-to-point distances for the Almora–Kausani, Almora–Bageshwar and Bageshwar–Chaukori legs from a source we would stand behind, so we do not publish figures for them. What we can tell you is the bound: the entire NH-309A alignment from Rameshwar through Gangolihat, Berinag, Bageshwar and Takula to Almora is 126 km, so every one of those legs is a fraction of that. Treat each as a half day of driving, ask us or a local driver for the current figure, and add slack. A guide that prints a confident number here has almost certainly copied it from another guide that made it up.

The honest verdict on the six-day: it is a very good trip if you accept that day six is a driving day and nothing else. If you want the same country without the long return, do it as seven days and split the drive back at Almora or Ranikhet.
Seven days: Munsiyari, and what it really costs you
People ask us for Munsiyari in five days. It cannot be done, and here is the arithmetic. Kathgodam to Munsiyari is 275 to 285 km and takes ten to twelve hours. The road runs Bhimtal, Bhowali, Khairna, Almora, Bageshwar, Kapkot, Thal, Tejam, Birthi, over Kalamuni Top at about 2,700 m, and down into Munsiyari at about 2,200 m. The Thal to Munsiyari section over Kalamuni has roughly thirty to thirty-five per cent of its length in poor condition, with steep patches and landslide exposure in heavy rain.
That is a two-day drive each way for anyone who wants to enjoy it, or one very long day each way with a pre-dawn start. Which means a seven-day Munsiyari trip has four days of driving in it and three of everything else. We will still take the booking. We would just rather you chose it knowing the shape of it. The variant we would actually suggest instead. If your seven days are precious and Munsiyari is not the one thing you cannot leave out, use the same week for Almora, Ranikhet, Bageshwar and Chaukori with two nights in each of two places. You will drive about half as much, see more, and spend the time in the hills rather than looking at them through a windscreen. If Munsiyari is the one thing, take nine days rather than seven.
Mistakes people make planning a Kumaon circuit
Too many destinations
The commonest by a distance. An itinerary with Nainital, Kausani, Almora, Ranikhet, Munsiyari and Corbett in six days is not a holiday, it is a survey. Every place on that list has one to three hours of hill road between it and the next, and those hours accumulate into whole days. Cut the list until each night is spent in a bed you slept in the night before, or the night after — ideally both.
Arriving at Munsiyari the same day as an overnight train
We see this booked and we advise against it every time. An overnight train into Kathgodam, then ten to twelve hours over Kalamuni Top, is roughly thirty hours of travel ending at 2,200 metres in the dark on the worst-surfaced section of the route. Almora, Ranikhet, Nainital, Bhimtal, Kainchi Dham and Ramnagar are all perfectly comfortable straight off a night train. Munsiyari is not, and Dharchula at nine to eleven hours is only sensible from a genuinely pre-dawn arrival.
Underestimating Kainchi Dham traffic
Kainchi Dham is 9 km from Bhowali on a road that every Almora-bound vehicle also uses, and its congestion is severe enough that shuttle and parking arrangements have been introduced. On a peak-season weekend, or anywhere near the 15 June anniversary, this is not a forty-minute stop. Plan it as a morning, go early, and read the visit guide before you fix the day.
Planning around distance rather than driving hours
The error underneath all the others. A spreadsheet that divides kilometres by sixty will tell you Kathgodam to Munsiyari is under five hours. It is ten to twelve. Use the published durations on our route pages, not a calculator, and then add slack for the things durations never include: the Nainital entry queue, the Kwarab diversion, a landslide clearance, lunch, and the fact that people on holiday stop to look at things.
Booking the return train too early on the last day
The one that ends trips badly. A circuit that finishes with a six-hour drive to catch an afternoon train from Kathgodam has no margin at all, and these roads do not reliably provide margin. Finish the last long drive on the second-to-last day. Always.
Booking a circuit rather than a series of drops
One practical note. A multi-day circuit with the vehicle retained is usually better value per day than the same route booked as separate point-to-point transfers, because a retained car has no empty legs in it and a series of one-way drops is mostly empty legs. It also means the same driver is with you for the week, which matters more than people expect on roads where local knowledge decides whether you take the diversion at Khairna or sit in it.

How many kilometres can you realistically drive in a day in Kumaon?

Can I do Munsiyari in a five-day trip from Kathgodam?
Not comfortably. Munsiyari is 275 to 285 km and ten to twelve hours from Kathgodam, which is realistically a two-day drive each way or one very long day each way with a pre-dawn start. Seven days is the minimum, and even then four of the seven are driving days. Nine days is the honest answer.
What is the best four-day Kumaon itinerary?
Base yourself once at Bhimtal or Nainital and work outwards: arrive and settle, then a Kainchi Dham morning, then a full day at the other lake, then an easy run back to Kathgodam. No day exceeds about two hours of driving and it works straight off an overnight train.
Should I stay in one place or move hotel every night?
Below about five days, stay put. The lower lakes are close enough together that Bhimtal, Nainital and Kainchi Dham are all day trips from one hotel. Beyond five days a chain trip covers more ground, but every hotel change costs you a morning.
How does the Kwarab landslide affect a Kumaon itinerary?
Any day that reaches or passes through Almora should carry an extra one to two hours of slack. The stretch has been closed repeatedly since 2024, most recently from 29 May 2026 until further orders, with diversions via the Kwarab bypass and Khairna to Ranikhet. We will not state its status today — check locally before you travel.
Can I visit Kainchi Dham and Nainital on the same day?
Yes, and they are only 17 km apart on the Nainital to Almora road. Do Kainchi Dham first, early, then Nainital. The reverse order puts you at the ashram at its most congested and in Nainital during the afternoon Mall Road restrictions.
Is a multi-day tour cheaper than booking separate taxis each day?
Usually, yes. A retained vehicle on a circuit has no empty return legs, whereas a series of one-way drops is mostly empty legs paid for by you. You also keep the same driver, which matters on roads where local knowledge decides whether you sit in a diversion or avoid it.
